Why I am a photographer

Like so many others, l picked up a camera to capture the cuteness of my babies when they were little. This quickly changed into an obsession with learning everything that l could to make not just pretty photos of my babies, but also photos that captured the moments , memories, feelings, and realness of their childhood.

Kids grow up so quickly and sometimes it feels like they change almost daily. They’re also full of quirks and wonderful behaviours that deserve to be recorded for the future.

The funny thing is while I was photographing my children l started noticing the wonderful differences and details in all of the people around me. l fell in love with capturing, through the art of photography, the beautiful uniqueness of people.

It is also through photography, and the challenges of self-portrait photography in particular, that I have been able to process some of the challenges of growing older and dealing with chronic illness. Photography lets me express myself in ways that I cannot otherwise express, and it lets me appreciate what I have.

(This is an update of a post I wrote several years ago, but I find that it is still relevant).
